United Center – Sports, Concerts, Conventions on Chicago’s West Side

The United Center, home to the Chicago Blackhawks and Chicago Bulls, is the largest arena in the United States, often called the “Madhouse on Madison.”

The United Center is home to world-famous statues, including:
? Michael Jordan – standing 17 feet from top to bottom, this bronze piece is on display inside the atrium and accessible to the public during atrium hours
? Bobby Hull –  outside at the NE corner of the building, a life-sized statue of the beloved Blackhawk who is the franchise’s all-time career leader in goals (604)
? Stan Mikita – outside at the NE corner of the building, a life-size statue of the man who wore the first jersey retired by the Blackhawks
? Scottie Pippen – #33 jersey was retired after the Chicago Bulls three-peat and his bust is inside at the Gate 7 entrance
? Johnny “Red” Kerr – Chicago native, the Bulls first head coach and longtime broadcaster with 35 years with the Bulls, his bust is inside the Gate 3 entrance

In 1988, William Wirtz, owner of the Chicago Blackhawks, and Jerry Reinsdorf, majority owner and Team Chairman of the Chicago Bulls, formed a new partnership to create an arena that would take sports and entertainment into the 21st century.

Construction was begun in April of 1992, with the ribbon cutting ceremony being held on August 18, 1994.

Since opening, the United Center has hosted over 200 events each year. Some of the events the United Center has been proud to host include the 1996 Democratic National Convention, The Rolling Stones, Eric Clapton, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, Paul McCartney, U2, The Who, The 3 Tenors, Ringling Brothers and Barnum & Bailey Circus, Disney on Ice, the Big Ten Men’s Basketball Tournament, the Men’s NCAA Basketball Tournament, the Great Eight Classic, Illinois College Basketball, and Champions on Ice.
