Maike’s Marvels (pronounced Micah), by Evanston, IL based Maike van Wijk, creates one-of-a-kind handmade wax and wire jewelry and home adornments.
We look forward to having Maike’s Marvels at the Chicago Artisan Market at Morgan MFG (401 N. Morgan St., Chicago) on Sunday, December 1, 2019 (10am-4pm) along with the Midwest’s finest artisans in food, fashion, home goods + art.
Steel wire is hand-bent into organic and abstract shapes and embellished with waxed paper (paper dipped in *encaustic medium), beads or other meaningful items. Her art is an expression of the joy and gratitude she finds in everyday living, with an aim to share that tranquility with others.
Maike?s creations include necklace pendants, wire collars, bangle bracelets and earrings. Maike enjoys customizing the pendants, earrings, necklaces, bracelets, keychains and ornaments as special gifts for loved ones.
* What does encaustic mean?
Encaustic is an ancient Egyptian art form that involves using heated beeswax to which colored pigments are added. Encaustic originates from the Greek word enkaustikos which means to ?burn in.? Today?s encaustic medium is a mixture of pure beeswax and damar resin.
Maike?s Marvels wax and wire ornamental collection includes ladybugs, dragonflies, butterflies and other whimsical creatures, which can be found in many gardens as plant stakes. During the holiday season, her snowman and angel ornaments are quite popular.
With roots in The Netherlands and Germany, Maike is trilingual and enjoys incorporating cultural memories and linguistic quirks into her work.
