The Blue Thread Shop sources leather from the US (primarily the East Coast and Oregon) and whenever possible, uses Horween leather from the Chicago-based tannery. Adina is inspired by traditional techniques of leatherwork which she likes to pair with a palette of neutral colors. This mix yields designs that are timeless, which is necessary as leather can last a lifetime. No detail is left out – from skiving the leather (thinning the edges to reduce bulk when sewing layers) to burning and melting the ends of the threads to ensure the stitching doesn’t unravel.

Leather is known for its strength and longevity, and The Blue Thread Shop creates classic products that are utilitarian, won’t go out of style and will stand the test of time while looking better with age. With time, leather develops a wonderful patina and character. Its patina develops over the years from the leather simply being exposed to the environment, the oils from our skin, sun light and everyday use. It’s a beautiful process and the patina of each piece is unique.

The Blue Thread ShopHow it all began:
The Blue Thread Shop was born as result of Adina’s husband, a first responder, and his need for some personalized, user-friendly gear. He asked his wife if she could make a custom radio holder for him to use at work. She did, and soon after that, another fire fighter asked for a radio holder of his own. Popularity grew and The Blue Thread Shop was born. The shop name came from the idea of stitching (thread) being ever present in Adina’s life, coupled with her love for the color blue.

About Adina:
Growing up, Adina’s mother worked as designer at a textile company and used to sew clothes for Adina and her sister when they were children. The idea of “making” was never foreign to their household, and Adina has been crafting for as long as she can remember. In her teens, she learned how to knit and as a young adult, she taught herself how to quilt. Crafting is something that has been with Adina through thick and thin and each year brings new challenges and growth as a maker. Her designs appeal to a classic American style and are made by hand at her in-home leather studio in Chicago.
