Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater gave its first, now-fabled performance in March 1958 at New York’s 92nd Street Y. The iconic choreographer led a group of young African-American modern dancers through a performance that forever changed the perception of American dance. Congress has since designated the troupe “a vital American cultural ambassador to the world” and they just radiate gravitas every time they step onto a stage.

In celebration of their 60th anniversary — and their 50th anniversary performing at Chicago’s Auditorium Theatre — you’ll see the Midwest premiere of the group’s first-ever two-act ballet: Lazarus, choreographed by Rennie Harris and inspired by company founder Alvin Ailey’s life and struggles against racial inequality. Other highlights include the Midwest premieres of Wayne McGregor’s Kairos and Jessica Lang’s EN — and as always, each performance ends with a production of Ailey’s masterpiece Revelations.
