Steppenwolf Theatre Company closes its 2011-2012 season with Anton Chekhov's classic Three Sisters, the humorous and affecting tale about longing for a better life, adapted by Tony Award- and Pulitzer Prize-winning ensemble member Tracy Letts and directed by Tony Award-winning ensemble member Anna D. Shapiro.
The privileged Prozorov family feels constrained by the smallness of life in their tiny provincial town, once a bustling army outpost where their late father served as general. Attempts to improve their crumbling social status lay bare the larger forces of unrest that will soon engulf them all. The lives of the three sisters of the title -- matriarchal Olga; witty Masha, and baby Irina -- all revolve around their brother Andrei and his sometimes questionable decisions, and each character's true nature is revealed by how they cope with their changing fortune.
