Getting pampered usually means treating yourself to something you wouldn’t normally do. But it can also mean treating yourself to something you simply can't do. The back facial is the best of both: a luxurious, exfoliating treatment for your hard-to-reach backside.
Back facials are particularly famed for combating the dreaded "backne." But even if you don’t suffer from the condition, a back facial will leave your skin smooth and ready for even the deepest of plunging backline dresses.
The back facial follows the same basic layout as a traditional facial. First, back skin is cleansed and exfoliated. Next, impurities and imperfections are extracted from beneath the skin’s surface, followed by a mask. Finally, the back is moisturized to restore nutrients and hydrate. Most back facials include a neck, shoulder and back massage to compliment this restorative treatment.
Some spas offer their own unique twists on the back facial. At Roque Salon in River North, the back facial is known as the "Sundari Balancing Back Treatment" and uses Ayurvedic practices in combination with massage and cleansing techniques to create a total sense of wellness.

The Brenda Bendel spa, located in the Teddie Kossof Salon in Northfield, intensifies the extraction process in its back facials by adding vacuum, suction and brushing to the treatment.

At Urban Spa Chic in the West Loop, the "Backside" includes a cleansing with steam, exfoliation, extractions, a volcano/paprika mask with hot towel removal and an application of a hydrating moisturizer. Clients can even request a self tanning application for an additional charge. A back, shoulder & neck massage is standard with this treatment and we recommend adding on a foot massage while your back is masking.

Don’t be discouraged if a back facial isn’t on the list of services at your favorite spa—many places that offer traditional facials have all the ingredients on hand to perform back facials for a small additional fee. The Ruby Room in Wicker Park, for example, doesn’t include back facials as one of its signature treatments, but they are available by special request. The Back Facial includes an exfoliating enzyme treatment to dissolve dry surface skin for a fresh glow.
